VIDEO: Prometheus Brown & Bambu (The Bar) - “Lookin’ Up”

Word up…two of my favorite MCs, Bambu and Prometheus Brown (aka Geo from Blue Scholars) on the same track. If you haven’t done it already, make sure to cop the collabo project they dropped on the Beatrock Music label last year.

I’m from a place where the system’s still feudal and the masses still colonized
landlords, light skin, stabbin’ (??) with their colored eyes
wonder why the goods ain’t no good, so we import
things we can make our damn selves, and we export

flesh bone, sista tryna make it home paid
while my privilege let me look at my plate and complain
hit a stage, get treated like I’m better than a fan
when a fan is for real, I just get in where I can

[ah yeah, another dope track from the Beatrock Music fam. This was a truly collective effort from my talented friends and kasamas who laced the vocals, produced the beat, and designed the cover art. Peep the MC’s description below]:

Happy Valentine’s Day,

On February 14, 2010 we released the “Blood of my Heart” downloadable single to give the listeners a preview of the album (Remittances) that Fatgums, Mr. Rey, and I had been working on for nearly a year. Strangely enough, “Blood of My Heart” was one of our most downloaded singles. And to this day I still get a lot of random shout-outs from people that claimed that that song had helped them process through their very own complicated relationships, partnerships, and love affairs.

As we move forward with our forthcoming EP, which is still untitled, we decided to give our audience another sneak preview of what’s to come… therefore we are proud to bring you the “Love is Contagious” single. With this piece we tried to capture the concept of love in its broadest form, and not relegate it to simply being about romantic or sexual love. As cultural workers rooted in progressive politics and ideology, Power Struggle wanted “love” to represent the struggles, sacrifices and unrelenting spirit of working-class people.

We have to give a special thanks to DJ ET for blessing us with this beat, which is his first production effort on Beatrock Music. ET is responsible for a large chunk of the production on the upcoming EP. We also want to thank Kayla and Claire DLR for lending us their beautiful voices on the chorus. Keep a lookout for visual artist/painter Mark Canto who painted the cover of this single, as well as the cover of the “Blood of My Heart” single. Lastly, big-ups to Fatgums for executively producing all our albums, probably one of the most principled dudes I’ve met in the music industry.

Hope y’all enjoy. Now go hug somebody….

Favorite Videos of 2010

I just thought about doing this post last week, so I’m probably missing a lot of other good videos. But for now, here’s my list:

Top Picks (in no particular order):

Fatgums x Bambu - Peddlin’ Music
This was one of my favorite songs from their Peaceful Riot EP in ‘09. I’m definitely glad that Fatgums decided to make a video for it…I just didn’t know the dude had skills like that! I can only imagine how long it took to do all that stop-motion stuff.

Rocky Rivera - Trick Habit
Just an all-around creative video! The production value on this joint is top-notch.

Dumbfoundead - Jam Session 2.0
This is probably the most inspiring video out of the bunch. It’s amazing to see how all these musicians/artists came together and created something through the wonders of technology.

Janelle Monae ft. Big Boi - Tightrope
Not only is this a great song, but it seems like it was also a really fun video to shoot. The dancing is off the chain!!

Cee Lo Green - F**k You
One of the catchiest songs I’ve ever heard + a child version of Cee Lo = need I say more?

Honorable Mention:

Blue Scholars - Lumiere
A really dope fan-submitted video that fits the song well.

Blue Scholars - Coffee & Snow 2
A nice sequel to the first video they did in ‘08.

Dumbfoundead - Up in the Air
This is the winner that Dumbfoundead selected for a fan-submission contest. This might also be my favorite song of the year (it’s been in constant rotation the last couple weeks).

Lupe Fiasco - I’m Beamin’
I’ve heard people (aka Underground Backpacker Elitists) say that Lupe went too “mainstream” with this, but I disagree.

Power Struggle - ArtOfficialFreedom
A great song accompanied by a good video that depicts the different aspects of this artist’s life.

Grynch - My Volvo
I posted this video last week, but this is just a real ass song/video. A lot of rappers don’t even own the cars they have in their videos, but this guy just put it all out there. Ain’t no shame in his game.
