Anticipation…

There are a lot of good hip hop albums coming out in the next few weeks. I’m about to be broke buying all this music!

I know…it’s weird to hear that people still buy music these days, but I like to show my support for the independent artists (or those who are in the mainstream, but are still very different from most of the other artists you hear on the radio).

Don’t get it twisted though, I’ll bootleg the hell out of a Jay-Z or Kanye album — they already have enough money.

9/18: Brother Ali “Mourning in America and Dreaming in Color”

9/25: Lupe Fiasco “Food & Liquor 2” and Murs & Fashawn “This Generation”

10/2: Bambu “…One Rifle Per Family”

10/9: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis “The Heist”

10/16: Dumbfoundead “Take the Stares”

Props to Murs for making a video for this.

Even though the song was released last October, the timing couldn’t have been better considering the recent Frank Ocean letter.

I didn’t like this song when it first came out, but it grew on me.

For the record though, I don’t consider myself a shoe head (in the conventional sense) — you won’t see me camping out overnight to cop the newest Jordans, refusing to buy something because it’s not “exclusive” enough, or judging other people because their shoe game is “weak”. I was never really all that into shoes, but something came over me in 2011 and I ended up buying more kicks last year than I had in the previous 2-3 years combined (wtf?!).

I know that this is just a manifestation of the culture of consumerism brought about by capitalism, so there are contradictions involved (along with my use of alliteration, lol), but dammit…nothing beats a fresh pair of kicks, nahmsayin?!

I use vulnerability as a tool to express my truth. And that’s been something that I have always done, that’s just the type of writing that I enjoy, it’s the type of artist I like listening to. You get a real genuine sense of who they are. And those are the songs that I tend to write. I think that it connects me with the music that I make because in the process of writing I’m figuring out who I am on a deeper level. And I think that the fanbase and that other people can resonate with it because hopefully you shed a little bit of light on potentially their experience or articulated something that they’ve gone through in their life.

Macklemore (http://respect-mag.com/exclusive-interview-macklemore-and-ryan-lewis-at-the-bowery/)

[Real talk. I’ve always admired and respected songwriters who aren’t afraid to show their vulnerability and put it all out there. In addition to Macklemore, some other MCs that come to mind are Brother Ali, Murs, and Kiwi. It’s easier said than done, but it’s something that I strive to do as well.]

It’s been an emotional day — my uncle passed away this morning. My dad lost a brother. My cousins lost a father. My aunt lost a husband.

It’s natural to feel this way when someone passes away, but we all need to make a conscious effort to consistently appreciate our loved ones. Tomorrow’s not promised…

Now when you’re young, death can make you aware of your mortality
At times we feel invincible, lose sight of reality
Until it takes a loved one, residing in our circle
It’ll hurt you cause you miss ‘em
Once were close, now you’re distant
And it hurts just to know that they could go at any instant
Gotta love ‘em by the minute, now you realize this
It’s sad it takes a loss to appreciate the gifts
So celebrate the occasion, just breathing is amazin’
To see the sun rise and set, at a days end
A chance to fix mistakes that we regret makin’
Find joy in the simple things, no time for complainin’
The sun will shine, it can’t always be rainin’
I know it hurts deep, but you must maintain it

West Coast hip hop at its finest.

I’ve said it many times before that MURS is one of my favorite rappers. He doesn’t have a super crazy rap delivery and his songwriting isn’t filled with deep, abstract imagery, but he spits in a way that folks can easily relate to and understand.

I’ve been a fan of his since ‘03 but I’m familiar with almost all of his work prior to that — it’s probably safe to say that the only early stuff of his that I don’t have are the cassette tapes he used to sell out of his trunk or after a show (yeah, he’s been doing it that long). Out of his whole catalog, I think the newest album, produced by Ski Beatz, is his best work to date. Check it out y’all!!

I post a lot of songs on here so it can be easy to just skip over them, but hopefully you take the time out to really listen. Not too many rappers would even think about speaking on this topic…

This doesn’t pertain to me right now, but I have a couple friends who might relate to this song.

I keep forgetting to remember to forget
all the lies and all the bullshit
all the reasons that we had to call it quits
pieces to our puzzle that never seemed to fit
started out fast but ended so quick
for weeks on end I was so sick
so the next time I start to reminisce
remind me to remember to forget

Anyway, I can’t wait for the new MURS/Ski Beatz album to drop in October! I’ve said it before, but he’s one of my favorite MCs who’s also had a big influence on my own music. He doesn’t have a crazy rap delivery and I don’t agree with some of his views or the things he says, but he’s always honest. I can’t knock that…
